Why it’s Important
How to Optimize Your Site Simply put, search engine optimization is
the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a webpage in a search engine’s
unpaid results, often referred to as natural, organic, or earned results. In other words, it’s the process by which
you try to show search engines, that should they place your site as their first result
for a given search term, it would also really satisfy the needs and intent of the
person conducting the search. To show search engines you should rank high
for a given search phrase, you have to add content that is highly relevant to that phrase. Once you’re sure your content is relevant
to any person searching for it, then you can start to work on optimizing your content so
that its easily readable for bots and provides the best user experience for your visitors. Let’s start off by taking a look at the cover
of this classic edition of the New York Times. We’ve all seen a newspaper and within a split
second we recognize what the entire page is about just by looking at the headings. The same holds true when we look at a website. It has a clear visual hierarchy and is marked
up in a way that humans can easily make sense of. But what about when Google looks at your site? How does it know what the page is about and
what text should be considered the headline of the page versus what text is a subheading? Through the use of header tags. While search engines are getting better and
better at understanding the structure of your content, there are ways in which you can help
them with understanding your page. Header tags as their name suggests are used
to differentiate the headings and subheadings of a page from the rest of the content. These tags are also known to webmasters as H tags. The most important heading tag is the H1 and
the least important is the H6 tag. Let’s take a look at that same newspaper again
and imagine it’s a website that Google is going to be taking a look at. Without the use of H tags, Google would see
the paper like this, with no sense of where or what the title is, where the headings are,
or even with the body copy of your site is. Here’s that same exact newspaper but this
time it’s marked up correctly for Google. We assign an H1 tag to the main headline because
that’s the most important text on this page. We assign an H2 to the sub headline, we assign
H3 tags to the article titles, and finally we assign the paragraph tag
to the body content of our page. Let’s go back into look at that same website
again. Everything is exactly the same in terms of
design except this time I’ve replaced the text on the page with the name of the correct
H tag that should be assigned to each of the text boxes. Pretty cool right? We see that the page title has been assigned
the H1 tag, we’ve assigned an H2 tag to each of the subheadings, and finally the body copy
of the site has been assigned the paragraph tag. To assign H tags to your text boxes,
simply select the text box, click edit text, and choose the correct header tag here, under themes. The next step in optimizing your site is to
help search engines create a summary snippet for each page that will then appear in search results. The summary snippet contains a title and a
short description of your site. If you don’t provide Google with your own
title and description, they will use the most relevant content they can find on your page. To take control of how your site appears in
search results add a page title and a page description in the SEO page settings section. These are located in the top left of the editor
under the page menu. Just click on pages, hover over the page you
want to edit, and click the circle with the three dots in it. Then choose page SEO. Here’s where you fill out your page’s title
and description. Assigning ALT Tags to Images The last step in optimizing your site for
search engines is to assign alt text to all of your images. This provides users and search engines with
information about your images and help search engines read them. To add alt text, click on the image, and then
click the settings icon. Scroll down to the image text section, click
in the field, and enter your text. The alt text should be short and descriptive. We recommend using less than 70 characters. Underneath the alt text field is the tooltip field. Here’s where you can say a bit more about
the image if you’d like. When people hover over the image your text
will open a pop-up.
