Will removing “.html” from my URLs help my site? – SEO Snippets

[MUSIC PLAYING] JOHN MUELLER: Today’s question
comes from James in the UK. He asks, “Will removing .html
from my URLs help my site?” URLs are important for
search engines like Google. Do they care which endings
your URLs use though? The answer is no. Google uses URLs to
identify pieces of content, whether your URLs end
with .html, .php, .asp, or just have words in
them, doesn’t really matter to Google. All of these URLs can show
up in search in the same way. That’s it. If you need to change
your URLs, for example, if you move to a new content
management system that doesn’t allow you to
use .html URLs at all, keep in mind that this change
would be a restructuring of your website. You would need to redirect
the old URLs to the new ones. This kind of change can
take quite a bit of time to be reprocessed. So picking a time when you’re
not dependent on search is a good idea. And because it can
take time, we don’t recommend doing this
kind of change on a whim. When making URL changes,
pick URLs that you’re sure can last a longer
period of time. [MUSIC PLAYING] JOHN MUELLER: We love sharing

Thank you so much for this. Indeed something I have always struggled with in my head and went back and forth with it. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH/…………….

Hi, We've a #1 ranking business website with a 7 year old url with the format city-keyword-keyword.tld, we've a new service & cover many more cities which means this url is not great anymore.

We're thinking of switching to our actual business name which is 29 characters long & not keywordy. What would you do? Almost everyone in our industry has keywordy urls (we know we need to change backlinks etc and it will be a lot of work)

Please advise. We're in a market with tough competition but the url is no longer as relevent to our business but we don't want to lose our rankings or business due to this.
