Object Based Broadcasting Production Tools


CWI has designed, developed and evaluated a set of tools for enabling the delivery of interactive and customisable experiences, in prerecorded and live broadcast scenarios. Both linear and object based broadcasts, start with preparing all media objects. In a linear broadcast, all media is combined into a single stream for delivery. In an object based broadcast, media objects are packaged and transmitted separately. In a linear broadcast, the single stream is delivered resized for each device. In an object based broadcast, objects are received separately and assembled specifically for each device. This enables rich interaction and customised applications that sync across all connected devices. In this object based broadcast of the FA Cup Final, objects are delivered synchronised with the main broadcast stream on the primary screen. Enhanced content, alternate streams and social interactions are controlled by the viewer on secondary devices. CWI has developed a pre-production tool, that enables preparation of broadcast objects and media assets prior to a broadcast. And a production tool, that enables directorial control of broadcast object insertion in live broadcasts. The Pre-production tool. The interactive and enhanced content for program or live broadcast is planned, structured and prepared using the preproduction tool. Media assets are loaded into templates designed to populate different size broadcast objects. Objects are optimised for delivery on different sized devices. The live production tool setup includes the program preview monitor. The triggering tool that triggers broadcast objects to be displayed over the main screen or causes the application on the second device to update. The live editing tool that controls which source media will be sent to the viewers devices. And the launcher tool that enables the director to control the broadcast with a push button interface. In this example, Number 4 from Manchester United gets a yellow card. The director requests the graphics editor to enter the information and submit it to the trigger tool. The director invokes the player object with the trigger tool. The object appears in the broadcast. The live production tool installed in an outside broadcast truck enables on location control of live events. Our research, design, prototyping and development process spanned three years. The process includes user-centric studies, design, wireframes, software and hardware prototypes and evaluation. Our process involved a real world trials including live theatre with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Live broadcasts of the MotoGP. And the English Football Association, FA Cup Final, at Wembley Stadium. We presented the tools and project at industry events such as IBC, the International Broadcast Convention. Several papers have been published in top venues during the course of this project, including a best paper award at, ACM, TVX, 2018. CWI was part of the 2Immerse, project co-funded by the EU.
