Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism (CBJ) – Nottingham Trent University

[MUSIC PLAYING] Here at CBJ, we have really
strong ties with industry and that’s one of our strengths. The great thing about that
is lots of people from the industry come to
the centre and they look at our facilities. And frankly, they’re
absolutely knocked out by them. Not only do we have
this fabulous news room, we’ve also got a suite of radio
studios, television gallery, and a television studio. We have outside
broadcast points. This is as close to the
real thing as you can get. [MUSIC PLAYING] We came out to film a news
package about the redevelopment of Trinity Square. So we’re going to
do a few interviews with a couple of the people
involved in the project. Every Friday we go and do
a couple of interviews, put together some images,
compose them together into a package. And that goes out at
4:00 PM this afternoon. [MUSIC PLAYING] So we filmed all of
our stuff this morning. We brought it back
into the newsroom. And we’re using Adobe
Premiere Pro to edit it. We’ve got all of
the Adobe products, so we’ve got auditioned
for radio editing. We’ve got Photoshop as well,
After Effects for design, and Illustrator,
all those things. We’ve got those
computers as well, so we’ve all got access
to that software. [MUSIC PLAYING] When you presented, you were
in this very nice studio. It’s actually a
proper studio, so this is more or less what it would
be like in a proper news room studio environment. We’ve got all the
proper equipment. We have the ear
pieces, all the cameras so you can hear what’s going on
in the gallery to the people, which is really good. And it gives you a
real idea of what it’s actually like to work
on a news studio, which is really important. And you can’t really buy
that kind of experience. So it’s really good. [MUSIC PLAYING] Facilities here at
Nottingham Trent are literally as good as
you can get anywhere else. They’re spot on to any other
news channel I’ve been into. It’s perfect because
when you’re going to step up and go
into another job, there isn’t a massive step up. It’s just moving from
being a student to working in the same facilities,
the same area, as you would in
the big wide world. This is similar to the
one that was started in London by Boris Johnson. Having all these
facilities at Trent really prepare us for getting
work after uni, when we’ve finished our degrees. All the news days we do
here prepare us for actually what goes on in a real newsroom. When they do go
into the industry, they’re not going
to be overwhelmed. They’ll be at home in this sort
of multi-platform environment. They’ll understand the way
a television studio works, the way a radio studio works. They know about green screen. They know about the
importance of online. They’ve done it
all to some degree, and that makes a great
difference to them when they actually
go into the industry. [MUSIC PLAYING]
